KOSAPETTAI SHIVA TEMPLES

1. AMUDHALINGAESWARAR TEMPLE

Kosapettai is a place near Puraisaiwakkam. This temple is situated in Vinai Theetha Vinayaka Koyil Street, Vinyakapuram. The original name of Shiva was Brahmapureeswarar as this temple was worshipped by Brahma. Now the name has been changed to Amudhalingaeswarar and Amman is called as Abhirami. This temple has many inscriptions on the walls and ceilings of the temple. This temple was found in a straight line with Ayanpuram Brahmapureeswarar temple. The Vinayaka of this temple was earlier called as Sidhi Puthi Vinayaka. This was a separate temple. The Brahmapureeswarar temple was destroyed in the 12th century during the Saivite - Vaishnavite Clash and later the deities have been placed in the Vinayaka temple. The Vinayaka temple and Shiva temple were situated adjacent to one another.

2. AADHIPUREESWARAR TEMPLE

This temple is situated in Padavettamman Koyil Street. The older name of this Shiva was Chidambaraeswarar. This was one of the Pancha Bootha temples of Purasaivakkam as Kosapettai was a part of Purasaiwakkam in those days. This temple denoted Sky. The Gangadheeswarar temple of Purasaiwakkam denoted water. The other 3 Pancha Bhootha temples are unknown. This temple was situated right opposite to the Padavettamman temple. Later this temple was destroyed in the 12th century and now there is a School in its place. All the other deities have been destroyed and only the Linga which was left over has been installed in the Padavettamman temple. In ancient days there were Sannidhis of Vinayaka, Muruga, Dhakshinamurthy and Chandikeswarar. There was no Amman. The Linga has a round Aavudaiyar. Now Chidambaraeswarar has been renamed as Aadhipureeswarar and has been installed in the Padavettamman temple and all the rituals are been conducted for Shiva here.
