History:

About 1300years ago this place was full of trees and very few inhabitants. A Shiva devotee named Kameswaran found this lingam submerged in the ground amidst trees. He took the Lingam out along with his villagers and laid the Lingam for worship in a small tent. A man name Viswam who lived in the village did not have children. He adopted a female Child and named it as Vasuki. Kameswaran and Vasuki fell in love with each other. Viswam was against their love. Vasuki and Kameswaran prayed to lord Shiva to settle their marriage. Shiva appeared as Parameswaran Gurukkals before Viswam and asked him to bring his daughter to the temple. He also told Kameswaran to come to the temple. He got them both married and tried to convince Viswam. Viswam was angry. He could not accept this marriage. Suddenly Parameswaran Gurukkal disappeared. Shiva and Parvathi appeared and blessed them. Viswam was also overwhelmed along with this couple on having the Dharshan of Shiva and Ambaal. He realised his mistake and asked for forgiveness to the lord. The Lord blessed him. Therefore this place was called Manamudichanallur. Even now men and women tie threads near the Nagapeetam of the temple to attain a successful marriage.

The Pancha Pandavas came to this place and stayed at Manimangalam a village near this place. Bheema the second of the Pandavas worshipped this linga and therefore The name Bheemaeswarar has been replaced.

The Manimangalam war raged between Narasimha Pallavan (Mamallan) and Pulikesi II in 642 AD damaged this temple and all the places around. Only bushes and snakes were found in this place. We  come to know about this form the inscriptions in Manimangalam.
