AMBATTUR SHIVA TEMPLES
1. AMBALAVANAESWARAR TEMPLE
This temple is located at a distance of 1km from Ambattur Bus Stand. The name of Shiva is Ambalavanaeswarar. This temple was installed and worshipped by Baheeradan. This was the Fifty First temple installed by Baheeradan. Therefore this place was called as Ambath Oar - meaning Fifty First which later changed to Ambattur. There was no Amman and Navagrahas in early days. This temple was built by the Cholas. The Vinayaka and the Chandikeswarar is very big. There were underground passages from this temple to many temple. This temple was destroyed and now recently a small temple has been built for Ambalavanar. An Amman Sannidhi has also been placed. Only the Shiva is old. All the other deities are new deities.
2. VIRUPAKSHEESWARAR TEMPLE
In early days the place where the temple is situated was a dense forest. This temple was worshipped by Suriyan. There was a 4ft tall Suriyan deity in this temple. There was no Chandran, No Amman and No Navagrahas in this temple. There were many inscriptions on the walls. The Vimana of this temple is in Gajaprishta style. The Avudiayar of Shiva is square in shape. A Big banyan tree stood as the Sthala Virusha of this temple. This temple was built by the Cholas.
Only the Shiva (Virupaksheeswarar) was left over after destructions. Now this place is fully accommodated by people and densely populated. The temple has been built amidst appartments an houses. The importance of Virupaksheeswarar has vanished. Amman and other Sannidhis have been installed and now people refer this temple as Vijayambigai temple. This place is now called as Vijayalakshmipuram.
3. KAPALEESWARAR TEMPLE
This was a big temple in the place near the Railway Station of Ambattur in Ambattur Railway station Road. Later the temple got destroyed. The Kapaleeswarar and Karpagambaal has been shifted to the Karpaga Vinayaka temple. In ancient days there was a Karpaga Vinayaka which stood opposite to the Shiva temple. The Kapaleeswarar was worshipped by Daityasura. He worshipped this Shiva for a long period and obtained boons. Daithya got the power of bursting any persons head from the Shiva of this temple. Since the Shiva here gave this boon of bursting one's Kapala (Head) Shiva came to be known as Kapaleeswarar.
