ADAYAR SHIVA TEMPLES
1. VELLEESWARAR TEMPLE
This temple was a brick temple and even now it is a brick temple after renovation. Shiva has a round Aavudaiyar. The place is now Karpagam Avenue. In ancient days this place was called as Velliyur. This temple was worshipped by Sage Sukracharya (Sukra means Velli). Therefore the name of Shiva was called as Velliyur and Velleewarar respectively. There were many temple along the Adayaru river. There were some inscriptions on the walls of the temple. This temple was destroyed during the Battle of Adayar. Now a new temple has been built for Shiva and many new deities have been installed in this temple.
2. VAITHEESWARAR TEMPLE
This temple was worshipped by Sevvai (Mars). Once Sevvai was affected by a disease whose nature was unknown by any Pysician of the Vaala Loka. Sevvai was adviced to install and worship Shiva along the Adayar river because the place was considered as Auspicious. Sevvai did so and got his disease cured. Because of this incident Shiva was called as Vaitheeswarar. Inscriptions were found in the walls of the temple.
This temple was found close to the Velleeswarar temple.
This temple was destroyed in the battle. We can find this Linga now in the campus next to the Velleeswarar temple.
3. ARUNACHALAESWARAR TEMPLE
This temple was worshipped by Arunan. This is a very small Linga under a Banyan tree. Now this place is called as Arunachalapuram. In early days this temple was small but there were some inscriptions in the temple. Local people lived near this temple. The name of Shiva is also known as Paritheeswarar and the local people called this Shiva as Kadhireswarar. This temple is one of the temples along the banks of the Adayar river. This temple was destroyed. Now this temple is a very tiny temple with a small Linga under a banyan tree.
4. VANNANTHURAI MARUNDHEESWARAR TEMPLE
This temple is situated in Marundheeswarar Nagar in Vannanthurai - a part of Adayar. The Linga, Amman and Murugar was found near the place where the temple is situated now. When the Land owner constructed his house he installed these deities in a Vinayaka temple and Later many other deities were added to this temple. The name of Shiva is Marundheeswarar and Amman Thiripurasundhari. At present these deities are found in the Vinayaka temple. The Linga is small with round Aavudaiyar. This Shiva cured the disease of a Shiva Devotee here. Therefore he obtained the name Marundheeswarar. Earlier Shiva, Amman, Vinayaka, Murugar and Nandhi were found in this temple. This temple is a Small Brick temple.
